Crane On Heroism Essays - Stephen Crane, , Term Papers

Crane On Heroism Crane on Heroism Stephen Crane, an avant-garde writer of his time, forced his readers to look beyond his written words for a more underlined, meaningful moral in most of his stories. Crane follows a strict pattern in most of his work. His subject matter usually deals with the physical, emotional, and intellectual responses of ordinary people confronted by extraordinary, extreme experiences. Fairly common themes are presented in his writing, including fallen humanity and harsh realities; yet all seem to overlap in the category of heroism. Crane, fascinated by the status of a hero, seemed to moralize each story he wrote with a sense of hope. Readers get the impression that you do not have to be super-human to possess super-human abilities, and in return, be a hero. In Cranes A Mystery Of Heroism, the search for the question What is a hero? is explored. Fred Collins, a union soldier in the Civil War, is a simple man. Out of place, Fred is a shameful, childish man thrown into a war that has no place for him. During the course of the story, Collins yearns for a drink of well water located across an active battlefield. Going against all his inhibitions and judgment, and going along with peer pressure, Collins decides to make the suicidal trip. Remarkably, Collins somehow gathers himself together and reaches the well of water, surprising himself in the meantime. Upon arrival at his destination, Collins ponders the miraculous obstacles he overcame and even dubs himself a hero for a moment. But what is a hero? Must one run across a battlefield for a drink to be put in the category of courageous? Is heroism nothing but defying death? Fred Collins evaluates his life at this point to disprove the title he loosely put upon himself: No, it could not be tru e. He was not a hero. Heroes had no shames in their lives an, as for him, he remembered borrowing fifteen dollars from a friend and promising to pay it back the next day, and then avoiding that friend for ten months. When at home his mother had aroused him for the early labor of his life on the farm, it had often been his fashion to be irritable, childish, diabolical, and his mother died since he had come to war. On Collins return to his regiment, he happens across a dying man in need of a drink. In a hopeless act of kindness, Fred lets the wounded soldier drink from his bucket as he passes. Yet this scene is but a small paragraph in the story, it completes the moral and emphasizes Cranes goal of the narrative. Although Fred Collins is but a simple man not free from flaws, he uncovers the mystery of heroism. He is not a hero because he put a title upon himself, or because he denied death the satisfaction. He is a hero in the sense that he did a good thing without trying for that hero title. Yet he might not know it, he was a hero for that one moment in the eyes of the wounded soldier. Crane also shows heroism works in very mysterious ways. In another of Cranes shorts, The Bride Comes To Yellow Sky, the character of Jack Potter is put to the task of proving his heroism as sheriff of his town. As the story opens, the reader is introduced to Jack as a subtle, quiet man. He is on his way to Yellow Sky, Texas riding in a parlor-car with his new wife. Crane purposely does not clue the reader in as to the true identity of Jack Potter in the beginning of the story for the presence of shock value. To find out that this reserved man is a fearless sheriff by day is surprising do to his actions described on his trip: From time to time he looked down respectfully at his attire. He sat with a hand on each knee, like a man waiting in a barber shop. The glances he devoted to other passengers were furtive and shy. As the train grows closer to Yellow Sky, Jack ponders the welcome he will receive. Frightened and worried about mixed reactions from the community in Yellow

Irregular Plurals Spelling Tricks You Need to Know

Irregular Plurals Spelling Tricks You Need to Know Irregular Plurals: Spelling Tricks You Need to Know Why, English? Why do you do this to us? Whenever we think we’ve figured out the rules, it turns out you have a bunch of counterexamples tucked away somewhere in the dictionary. Possibly the most famous way the English language likes to keep us guessing is with irregular plural nouns. These are words that don’t follow the usual spelling convention of adding an â€Å"-s† to make a plural (for instance, â€Å"one dog† becomes â€Å"many dogs†). Words that end in a â€Å"-y† are one example, but there are plenty of others. Luckily, we have some guidelines for spelling different kinds of irregular plural. It all depends on how the word ends†¦ Words Ending â€Å"-f† or â€Å"-fe† When a word ends in an â€Å"s include: Singular Plural Half Halves Life Lives Scarf Scarves This does not apply when a word ends in a â€Å"-ff,† so â€Å"sheriff† becomes â€Å"sheriffs† (not â€Å"sherives†). Other exceptions include chiefs† and â€Å"beliefs.† Words Ending â€Å"-us† Often originating in Latin, words that end in â€Å"-us† typically take an â€Å"-i† in plural form, such as when â€Å"cactus† becomes â€Å"cacti†: Singular Plural Abacus Abaci Nucleus Nuclei Hippopotamus Hippopotami Again, there are exceptions to this rule, notably â€Å"virus† (which becomes â€Å"viruses†) and â€Å"octopus† (for which â€Å"octopuses† – not â€Å"octopi† – is the standard plural). Likewise, hippopotamuses and abacuses are now also commonly accepted as correct variations of the older Latin spellings. Word Ending â€Å"-on† or â€Å"-um† Other Latin-derived word endings to look out for include â€Å"-on† and â€Å"-um,† both of which take an â€Å"-a† when forming a plural (so â€Å"criterion† becomes â€Å"criteria† and â€Å"stadium† becomes â€Å"stadia†). Additional examples include: Singular Plural Phenomenon Phenomena Millennium Millennia Automaton Automata Bacterium Bacteria Words Ending â€Å"-is† or â€Å"-ix† Words with Latin or Greek origins and â€Å"-is,† â€Å"-ex† or â€Å"-ix† endings tend to change to â€Å"-es† or â€Å"-ices† in their plural forms, so â€Å"analysis† becomes â€Å"analyses† and â€Å"appendix† becomes â€Å"appendices†: Singular Plural Crisis Crises Dominatrix Dominatrices Axis Axes Vortex Vortices Words that Change Vowel Sounds To make matters even more confusing, some words change their vowel sound completely when forming a plural, like how â€Å"foot† becomes â€Å"feet†. See also: Singular Plural Woman Women Tooth Teeth Mouse Mice Words that Stay the Same Some irregular plurals actually stay the same as the singular form of the word. Examples include â€Å"squid,† â€Å"sheep,† â€Å"fish,† and â€Å"species.† For instance, both â€Å"a fish† (singular) and â€Å"a shoal of fish† (plural) are correct. It’s also worth noting that uncountable nouns, like â€Å"water† or â€Å"sand,† stay the same regardless of the amount being described.

Telemedicine Project Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Telemedicine Project - Essay Example On the specifications, there are very specific demands that the outfit seeking to go into telemedicine must provide. Examples of these specifications include Once an outfit is ready to provide all of these requirements and meet the criteria spelt above, it can be considered for the practice of telemedicine. Generally, these requirements are in place, given the fact that they help in ensuring that there is the standardization of practice in a manner that protects and guides the interest and needs of patients and the general public (USPMC, 2002). They are also in place to ensure that the execution of telecommunication is done in a manner that can guarantee the safety of service providers (Zur, 2014). Whereas there are requirements and criteria to identify what people and organizations must have in place in order to practice telemedicine in the U.S, there are also laws and regulations that control the practice of telemedicine after all requirements have been met and practice has been set rolling (APA., 2011). Different styles of leadership have become evident through time Essay

Different styles of leadership have become evident through time between the two genders - Essay Example However, these differences also serve to create variations in the manner of leadership and management within the organization. Different styles of leadership have become evident through time between the two genders. Therefore, the question that begs to be answered is whether a relationship exists between gender and styles of leadership adopted by managers within formal organizations? If so, to what extent do the personality differences impact in the choice of a leadership style as well as sustaining its use through a finite period of time? This does not imply that there is a certain optimal leadership style that appeals most to a given gender. Certainly not; there lacks consensus that one leadership style is most effective although there is evidence through research that demonstrates a sharing of common characteristics and preferences by those in leadership positions, which tends to exerts pressure upon those who are different (Carpenter & Sanders, 2006). This proposal examines the l eadership characteristics and preferences in relation to gender. ... n for the firm, communicating this vision with both depth and clarity to other members of the organization and directing and sustaining their concerted efforts towards the attainment of this vision. During the early periods of the industrial revolution, leadership was focussed on primarily ensuring profitability for the organization. This approach favoured poor governance structures and often led to gross misconduct and abuse of managerial authority by those in managerial capacities. Modern leadership utilizes the wide berth of theoretical models that have been developed and tested through time. Management’s leadership function also takes cognisance of emergent concerns and issues such as ethics and corporate social responsibility, in addition to an emphasis of core principles of accountability, responsibility and fairness (Dyck & Neubert, 2008). Is there a better leader in men than women or vice versa? This has been a source of intense controversy and much interest of most th eorists and managers alike. There have been two approaches to this fundamental question in management: Firstly, that men and women fundamentally differ in the way they lead others within an organization (Carpenter & Sanders, 2006). Secondly, and which is the widely accepted position by most social scientists is that there are relatively no significant differences in how men and women lead given a controlled environment (Dubrin, 2009). Those who subscribe to the former school of thought, mostly attribute this difference to the â€Å"female voice†. This has, however, been overlooked by most mainstream researchers. Empirical research into these approaches has only served to further the controversy and confusion in this managerial area. Studies carried out between 1961 and 1987 have been cited by

Journal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 9

Journal - Essay Example On the same day I started to research McGraw Hill Publishing which I should have began much earlier for the details of my business class. I was trying to find out the definition of love. Various interesting questions were disturbing me. I was thinking that when any body is in touch with someone for quite some time then whether he/she would be in love with that person. On September 16, I went to visit the grave of my mother accompanied by my brother. After reaching there we found that the gates were closed. I doubted whether we would accomplish anything by praying from the gates of grave instead of doing it from the grave. After that we ate together. We had a good time together after quite some time. On that day my father had a fight with my step mother and once again the issue of fighting was my brother. I think my brother should ignore her (my step mother) if he can not have share healthy relationship with her. On September 19, I could not wake up early and as a result I missed the prayers. I was upset because the prayer takes place once a year and I missed it just because of my laziness. I realized that next time I need to wake up early in the morning so that I can attain it in time. September 19 was a nice holiday, because my sister and her husband came to our place and spent the day with us. It was actually quite boring to stay everyday at an empty house just with my parents. On that day a interesting question came in my mind. I asked myself whether the concept of throwing away all sins into a fish bowl really make any sense or not. The last day began with the visit to the synagogue. On this day, my brother-in-law got to see an unusual sight. It was about the killing of fish in the synagogue. He was not comfortable with the sight. We did not have such feelings as we had become quite used to it. It was a inspiring holiday for me. I learnt

Economic Growth of Dubai

Economic Growth of Dubai Is Dubai Playing It Right? Nowadays there doesnt seem to be an end to human needs. People aspire for prosperity prosperous life, a good job, a good house, to drive a well manufactured car, and even to have a huge Bank account!! These aims may be a little bit crashed because of the economic crisis that has recently hit the world. Many countries after this crisis tried to recover and rebuilt their economy and return to be stronger and face this crisis. Others couldnt do that as this economy crisis hit it very hard as this country resources are not good enough or rich enough to get over it. From the countries that were hit by this economic crisis is Dubai. Dubai is a very fast growing country economically, it is the meeting point between the East and the West, it links between western modern life and eastern hospitality. Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates UAE. There is nothing you cant find in Dubai from beautiful beaches and clear aqua blue seas to indoor activities, an underwater hotel and skyscrapers, there is never a shortage of things to do in Dubai. It has the biggest airport in the world, the largest man-made port in the world, the largest Mall in the world, the only 7 Stars Hotel in the World, the largest Skyscraper in the world and finally the largest Theme Park in the world which is about 3 times bigger in size than Disney World in Orlando !! as came in DubaiCondoProperty.com. The question is; is it a right way to become a leading economic country at this short time? People might think that it is not the best path for development; because there are some barriers. First, resources being under stress. Second, large amounts of loans leading to debts, and Third, people that might lose their jobs and companies that might shut down if the economy falls down. One of the reasons that support this point of view is that any developing country it should have enough resources for investment especially if we are talking about the UAE, many of these countries contain Oil resources except Dubai This city state is purely a business city wholly depending upon tourism and other business. Dubai World, attract world entrepreneurs that started spending more and more on building fine roads, and 7 Star Hotels. Prasadjain said in an article entitled Financial crisis in Dubai, reasons and effects. So Dubai is not an Oil Country and depend mainly on money that it earns from these investments especially tourism sector. But immediately after this economic crisis a rumor spread that after the Atlantis opening ( which cost about 1.5Bn Dollars ) the hotel was only charging 10 percent of the original price and has only about 26 percent occupancy as mentioned in Diversification Dubais Downfall by Helena Axelson Fisk. Also it was published that Dubai began to pron ounce a plan for building two more villages like Al Nakheel (Palm Island) which is a group of Islands on the shape of a Palm that cost about 110Bn Dollars before it was even completed! As published in BBC News website. Huge investments surely need massive amount of money, this condition is not available in Dubai, it tend to Borrow money from Banks all over the world, leading to debts then failure to repay. UAE faces up to $184 Billion total debt according to estimates by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, also the Bank said that Dubai only faces almost $50 billion of debt amortization in the next three years: $12 billion in 2010, $19 billion in 2011 and $18 billion in 2012as mentioned by Sebastian Tong in article entitled UAE faces up to $184 billion total debt: BofA-Merrill Lynch. Also there are many Banks that were hit because of Dubai inability to repay Banks were hit particularly hard on concerns over Dubais ability to pay back its debts as came on BBC News, some of these Banks are Barclays which was the biggest faller down by 8%, followed by Royal Bank of Scotland, which lost 7.8%. Dubai asked for a six-month delay on debt repayments it was due to repay $3.5Bn in December. Other reason that strengthens my position is that a fast economic growing country should have a strong market study and economic plan to preserve peoples jobs as when it falls down, people might lose their jobs and companies might shut down, thats what happened in Dubai when it was hit by economic crisis. Nowadays a lot of people were fired and lost their jobs because companies couldnt pay them. Lots of people have left my neighbor, an architect from the US, was fired and her whole company was shut down. A western journalist said as mentioned in BBC News. Other witness to these incidents A lot of our friends have lost jobs, particularly senior management in human resources and information technology, some have stayed here, but others have left, says Grace, in an article by Michael Buchanan. It reached that people leaving Dubai and parking their cars in the airport. On a recent walk around the car park at Dubai Airport, there were more than two dozens cars that looked completely aban doned by their owners. Some people wrote little messages on the layers of sand that have gathered on the vehicles. One says Gone 4 Ever, and another says He will return Inshallah This was mentioned by Michael Buchanan as well. Concerning losing jobs as well Buchanan mentioned that The competition for jobs is fierce now, whereas there would be two people for one job before, I think there is ten now. The opportunities arent there as much and the salaries arent there. Its just getting worse and worse! On the other hand, some people might disagree with this point of view and assure that Dubai will make it and survive peacefully from this economic trap as Abu Dhabi; Dubais Twin has just lent it $ 10Bn to repay her debts as mentioned by Margaret Coker in an article entitled Dubais Rescue Boosts Others. But it would be the same and the circle would not stop as its going to be a Series of Debts. Finally, Dubai should take step by step in her economical growth and not jumps, plus its not the top needs of citizens to have this luxurious fantasy life, by this amount of money Dubai might have done many important projects to help the 3rd World Countries, these amounts of money can be charged to many productions that might aid the needs of people all over the world. On Images :: Senses Philosophy Papers

On Images Concrete images are like pictures in the mind's imagination which have been transferred from real objects through the eyes. Abstract images also exist in the imagination, but are not easily described or communicated. Both images interplay in various ways as a person experiences emotional, dream and pure thought states of consciousness. Despite the interplay, the two kinds of images do not merge or meld into a third image type as a graduation between the two. Concrete images change, sometimes drastically. They never become abstract images, however deformed they are. Abstractions are somewhat assumed and exist as spontaneous and at times irrational images in the mind's eye. Light, reason, infinity and nothing are examples of abstract images which cannot be given accurate visual representation. Images take on different meanings with regard to language, death, prayer and society or politics; but the two types remain distinct. All human beings experience both concrete and abstract imagery . However, the level of ability to think abstractly varies from person to person. For Aristotle, the most important and most enjoyable of the senses is the sense of sight. (1) The human eye receives an image with the use of light. Vision of the physical world outside ourselves occurs as light reflects off objects, passes through the eyes, and presents an image to the mind. It is believed that these images are not unique to any single person because they are communicated and described back and forth, thus weakening the solipsist's struggle. In this paper, abstract and concrete images will be defined by way of discussion of the imagination and the mind. Apparently the mind functions in such a way that many images happen without any mechanistic equation to tell us how. The imagination is familiar and so are the images, but it is the wonder and challenge of how they interact that deepens our understanding. It is contended here that the line between the two types of images is stark and obvious, and not a graduation. Images are either concrete or abstract, without any i n between. By concrete image we understand a sort of picture present when we are seeing something or as we close our eyes and remember it. The image seems to be present as a form outside ourselves in the object and in our mind simultaneously. It is an image which has color and real properties like shape and texture. Joyce Betts 03/04/2013 Week 4 Assignment Short Critical Reflection Paper The three Questions I have chosen are: * Online education has evolved over the last ten years as much as the cell phone. Given this, what have been some of the major improvements and changes in the digital classroom? In the 1900s, few universities had online classes. Today, online education is one of the most exciting and revolutionary aspects of our education. Ashford University is one of the top ten online schools, and by now you have a good understanding of how it works.Course management systems are software programs that define the online classroom environment. In late 2009, Ashford University made a change from Blackboard to eCollege software. Most educators believe that Blackboard is one of the most basic systems in distance learning. On the other hand, some people have called eCollege a â€Å"force to be reckoned with† (Babb & Mirabella, 2007,p. 162). With a growing demand for these systems among e ducational institutions, the developers will continue to put pressure on each other to improve their products. This benefits the student, because it ensures that course management software will continue to evolve and enhance the online learning experience. * What types of strategies can educators use to ensure their students are not â€Å"flaming† in a way that causes damage to others? Flaming is a term that describes an increasingly intense and vicious debate. Always avoid offensive language, and be sure to reread everything you write so that it cannot be interpreted as offensive in any way.Never share personal material about any other classmate in a post. Opinions are important to share, but do not make posts a stage from which to broadcast your personal views of life. Making sure each and every student understands the rules of proper etiquette. Finally, if you have a question about something you what to write or about what another student wrote, email your professor private ly. If I post a poem on my Facebook site and someone cuts and pastes it on their site is that a case for stealing my intellectual property?I do not think this is stealing my intellectual property. If you did not want it posted on other sites you need to copyright it. In conclusion, the dark side of the internet will always be with us. If you arm yourself with knowledge, install advances software protection, and license your intellectual property, you should have save experience. References: Bowles, M. D (2010). buy custom Chiefdom vs State essay

buy custom Chiefdom vs State essay For that some should rule, and others should be ruled is a thing not only necessary but expedient: from the hour of their birth, some are marked for subjection, others for rule (Aristotle). In ancient times Kingdoms were also referred to as the kingship or monarchy because of its status and the royalty it holds. Both the state and the chiefdom have political and leadership interest though they are distinguishable in terms of structure but similarities in terms of administrative roles. Although Chiefdom is not common in the modern society both the state and the chiefdom were used during the ancient period by different communities. The similarities can also be defined in terms of the natural resources that both the state and the chiefdom govern and maintain. The management is based on the fact that the resources available in the locality can be shared or the revenue it generates can be shared within the community. The primary role of the chief or the president is to ensure that the immediate people who live within the rich resource are the beneficiary. In terms of ownership of the territory, both the state and the chiefdom have their territorial definition. The power to protect the border is vested upon the chief (Chiefdom) and president (state) under a written document such as the constitution. In both societies i.e. chiefdom and state the wielding of power by the rulers was of great essence. Thus was to make sure the status quo is maintained. In order to wield this power the importance of having a strong military force and accumulation wealth by the president and chief of was much stressed. In most cases the kingship or the statehood was considered royal and was accorded much respect and the national status or the chiefdom hood. Bothe the chiefdom and the state had a role to play in the decision making regarding the distribution and budgeting of the finances, distribution and allocation of powers, developmental issues, religious matters and social status of the communities within their jurisdiction. The chiefdom and the state had a settlement pattern based on sedentary many villages and the basis of their relationship was fundamentally dependent on class and residence, although states later developed modern cities (Scarre, 2007). The first states were not disinguishable from the advanced chiefdom, because they had similar administrative structures and population size. The economic activities such as agriculture (horticulture and small scale farming) and trade was common in both the state and chiefdom. However the development of states was preceded by formation of small scale societys referred to as the chiefdom. Te development of the state through the chiefdom can be illustrated in the diagram below: Due to the development of states from the chiefdom there are differences which emerged and are significant and worth mentioning. At the heart of the chiefdom was the kinship which was very strong. The kinship was fundamentally based on the family linkage and lineage where the first or the eldest male in the most senior lineage was the chief. The main responsibility of the chief was to perform ritual and governance while basically maintaining the lineage. At the state level there was no performance of ritual by the leader. This is because the major role of the ruler was to enhance and concentrate on administrative issues and duties. The division of labor at the chiefdom level was by ascriptive category while at the state level a complex division of labor and elaborate stratification was developed. As the state continued to be developed, the clan of the chieftain shifted the emphasis from the kinship to the society at large so as to develop a noble and qualitative lineage (Scarre, 2007). This will help in hiring of specialist such as scribes, priest and soldiers who will play a major role in governing. There are other distinct features which differentiate the state from the chiefdom. The population of the chiefdom span up to thousands but that of the state should be at least 50,000. Whereas the difference between the state and the chiefdom can be intricate, the lines can be drawn in terms of degree or magnitude: more and larger villages or cities: more social strata: more complex division of labor. There is intense exploitation of natural resources at a chiefdom level while at the state level there is development of elaborate institutionalized bureaucracy to control and manage a greater population, large and wide area, and greater intensification of the exploitation of the natural resources. During the evolution of the states, there was emergennce of the capitalist who will amass vast wealth by exploiting market imperfections and market distortions created by the state and use the wealth for economic exploitation especially large scale trading. In a chiefdom setting, the ruling chief is the manager, military leader, judge and priest. This mean that the powers of the ruler are not divided although they are from different sources. At the state level the powers are divided and bureaucratized. Since the state serves people from different cultures and societies, the holders of the offices such as the military and judges should be guided by certain policies and regulations so as to serve without bias and impartiality thus bureaucratic. The state was considered to be a monopoly because it derived its power and force from the explicit legal system and the writings (Scarre, 2007). Another significant distinguishing factor is the decline in the social groups defined by the kinship and the replacement of groups defined by class and residence. On the other hand the state is very important to the typology of language change. The state is able to bring together sufficient force to conquer, incorporate and integrate other societies leading to multiethnic and multilingual state. While the state is considered an egalitarian society the chiefdom is a utilitarian society in terms of labor and market capitalization. It is very important to study the chiefdom because it is the foundation of the state and it helped in the definition of the state in terms of governance and administration. The basis of chiefdom is to enhance societal development through division of labor and careful exploitation of the natural resource available. Chiefdoms were very powerful in terms of controlling labor and managing of enormous natural resources. They could get labor from the commoners, who were considered of low class, and pay them. This method was adopted by the state, thus bringing the essence of studying chiefdom. Therefore, the chiefdom laid an important foundation in the development of structures in terms of administration and governance of the state. The contribution of the chiefdom socio-cultural nature cannot be ignored. This is because it helped in setting the standards which the sate used to incorporate and integrate. Contrary to what most people think, even though Blue whales live in the sea, they are mammals. They breathe air, have their babies born alive, and can live anywhere from 30 to 70 years. The Blue whale is a baleen whale, and instead of having teeth, Blue whales have around 300-400 baleen plates in their mouths. Baleen are rows of coarse, bristle-like fibers used to strain plankton from the water. Baleen is made of keratin, the same material as our fingernails. The Blue whale is called a rorqual, a Norwegian word for furrow referring to the pleated grooves running from its chin to its naval. The pleated throat grooves allow the Blue whales throat to expand during the huge intake of water during filter feeding; they can hold 1,000 tons or more of food and water when fully expanded (Small 1971). They average about 50-70 throat grooves. Blue whales grow up to about 80 feet (25m) long on average, weighing about 120 tons. The females are generally larger than the males, this is the case for all baleen whales. The largest specimen found was a female 94 feet (29m) long weighing more than 174 tons (Satchell 1998). The head of the Blue whale forms up to a quarter of the total body length. Compared with other rorquals, the head is very broad. The blue whale heart is also large, the size of a small car and can pump almost 10 tons of blood throughout the body. They also have a very small, falcate (sickle-shaped) dorsal fin that is located near the fluke, or tail. Blue whales have long, thin flippers 8 feet (2.4m) long and flukes that are 25feet (7.6m) wide. The blue whales skin is usually blue-gray with white-gray spots. The underbelly has brown, yellow, or gray specks. During the winter, in cold waters, diatoms stick to the underbelly, giving it a yellow to silver- to sulfur...

Modern Managers Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Modern Managers - Essay Example Newman (1995) stated that a person's identity is not just a function of one's personal values and traits but it is also a function of the behavior and attitudes of people who have made a significant impact in their lives. As the other people's cultural values change, then their friends also do likewise. Newcomers to a business firm learn the appropriate roles and behaviors to become effective and participating members of that organization. Third, people who work together tend to share the same cultural values and ethics. Watson (1995) stated that a human grouping be it a school or the workplace shares a system of meanings which define what is good and bad and what are appropriate ways for members of that grouping to act and behave. Moreover, he also explained that being part of an occupation involves engagement on a regular basis in a part or the whole of a range of work tasks which are identified under a particular title by both those carrying out these tasks and by the general public. (Watson 2005). Fourth, a person's educational background has an impact on his socialization. The correspondence principle sets this general model - the higher you rise in education hierarchy, the better job you will get. However, the UK has fundamental inequalities in its educational system. The British students experience education not on the basis of merit but in terms of their ability to take a series of opportunities which is hugely dependent on their available resources. Only seven (7%) of the UK student population can afford to attend private schools. These students them move on to become Oxbridge students. About 100 schools (80% of them are private) provide almost one-third of all Oxbridge students. This inequality in education leads to other forms of inequalities such as social class, gender and ethnic groups. A way to expand educational opportunity to all would be to make university tuition fees affordable. In this sense, the students will be able to widen their participation. Fifth, managers who possess excellent social skills tend to succeed more. For instance, likeability is a valuable tool that complements crucial management skills such as the ability to communicate with employees, give inputs to senior management, interact with customers, and build effective teams. A manager who cultivates this skill is bound to become more successful. Customers are more likely to purchase products and services from someone they like. However, the value of being liked does not end with a job promotion. Moreover, managers may be required to communicate to corporate employees the specifics of a difficult company policy, A manager who learns how to become a genial salesperson and a good communicator will get better results. Managers need to learn the art of listening skills by listening more attentively to someone they like or to someone they merely tolerate. In order to be an effective manager, one must know several socialization skills. An important socialization skill is the recognition of the importance of getting along with others. Managers strive to be genuinely appreciated for who they are, how they act, and what they stand for. The linchpin of likeability is mutual respect which is based on the right attitude towards work and people, and then develops as managers work on providing the right communication climate, staying well-attuned to employee reactions, meeting or managing expectations, and seeking a balanced approach to issues. The second

Effects of homelessness on students Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Effects of homelessness on students - Essay Example They are most often separated from their families and forced to live with foster parents. Violence within the family leaves them stressed. They lack regular medical care and emotional support. Most homeless children and youth face difficulties in enrolling, attending and succeeding in school and this is precisely what the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act intends to provide. Under the McKinney-Vento program, the State Educational Agencies (SEA) has to ensure that each homeless child or youth has equal access to the same free appropriate education as other children, including a public preschool education (USDoC, 2004). This also provides the homeless students rights to other educational services that would enable them to meet the challenges and achieve the standards like other children. The Act prohibits the school from segregating the homeless student in to a separate school. Transportation to and from school have to be ensured. All decisions have to be taken in the best interest of the child including the choice of school as desired by the parents or the guardian. This Act also provides for obtaining immunization, which is the responsibility of the local liaison appointed by the local educational agencies (LEA) apart from identifying the needs of the homeless. They have to work with the families and make them aware of the rights for their children unde r this Act. The Act also provides the students the rights to continue in the same school where they went before becoming homeless. The students have a right to enroll and attend school without being forced to give a permanent address without complete documents normally required for enrollment. Having homeless students in the class can be challenging and requires patients and creativity in the teachers (Maronek, n.d.). School can provide the stability and help the homeless cope with the situation. After providing the basic needs, the teachers should assess the level of academic ability. They should be
